Origin / Habitat

Native to southern Peru. Found in dry tropical forests and semi-arid scrubland environments where it establishes burrows in compact soil beneath stones, roots, or fallen wood. The native conditions are warm and moderately humid with distinct wet and dry seasons.

Category

New World Terrestrial / Fossorial

Adult Size

Females: 5 – 6 in (12 – 15 cm) leg span
Males: smaller and leggier

Temperament / Behavior

Generally shy but defensive when threatened. Quick to retreat into its burrow yet may flick urticating hairs or strike if provoked. Displays vivid blue-black legs and metallic red abdominal hairs that intensify with age and good lighting.

Recommended Enclosure

Provide a terrestrial setup with 5 – 6 in of slightly moist substrate for burrowing. Include cork bark or driftwood for shelter and web anchoring. Maintain moderate ventilation with a water dish for humidity balance.

Temperature & Humidity

Temperature: 74 – 80 °F (23 – 27 °C)
Humidity: 65 – 75 % RH
Ventilation: Moderate airflow; avoid fully dry substrate

Diet / Feeding Frequency

Slings: Micro crickets or fruit flies 2–3× per week
Juveniles: Small crickets or roach nymphs twice weekly
Adults: Medium crickets or dubia roaches once weekly
Remove uneaten prey within 24 hours.

Growth Rate & Lifespan

Moderate growth. Females mature in 3 – 4 years and live 12 – 15 years. Males typically live 3 – 4 years post-maturity.

Handling / Caution

Handling discouraged. T. cyaneolum can be nervous and fast, with a strong flicking response. Use long tongs for maintenance and allow it to retreat naturally.
