Category
New World Terrestrial
Adult Size
Females: 5 – 6 in (12 – 15 cm) leg span
Males: smaller and slender
Temperament / Behavior
Generally calm but can be skittish when disturbed. Relies on retreating into its burrow rather than threat displays. May flick urticating hairs when stressed. Known for its vivid metallic-blue coloration over a dark base — one of the most visually striking tarantulas in the hobby.
Recommended Enclosure
Terrestrial enclosure with 4 – 5 in of slightly moist substrate and multiple anchor points for webbing. Provide a cork bark hide or rock structure to mimic natural burrows. Ensure moderate cross-ventilation and avoid overly damp conditions.
Temperature & Humidity
Temperature: 75 – 82 °F (24 – 28 °C)
Humidity: 65 – 75 % RH
Ventilation: Moderate — balance airflow with slight substrate moisture
Diet / Feeding Frequency
Slings: Micro crickets or fruit flies 2–3× per week
Juveniles: Small crickets or roach nymphs twice weekly
Adults: Medium crickets or dubia roaches once weekly
Remove uneaten prey within 24 hours.
Growth Rate & Lifespan
Moderate growth rate. Females mature in 3 – 4 years and live up to 12 – 15 years. Males mature faster and live 3 – 4 years post-maturity.
Handling / Caution
Handling discouraged. While not defensive, L. sazimai is quick and can leap short distances when startled. Use tongs for enclosure maintenance and minimize vibration.
