Category

New World Terrestrial

Adult Size

Females: 7 – 8 in (18 – 20 cm) leg span
Males: smaller and leggier

Temperament / Behavior

Docile and calm, rarely defensive. This species is slow-moving and tolerant of moderate enclosure activity, making it ideal for display and beginner education. Occasionally flicks urticating hairs when startled but generally prefers to retreat. Known for its striking golden leg bands and large size.

Recommended Enclosure

A terrestrial enclosure with a minimum floor space of 3× leg span. Provide 4 – 5 in of slightly moist substrate for burrowing and a cork bark or half-log hide. Maintain moderate airflow and a water dish at all times.

Temperature & Humidity

Temperature: 72 – 80 °F (22 – 27 °C)
Humidity: 60 – 70 % RH
Ventilation: Moderate — good airflow with occasional light misting to maintain balance

Diet / Feeding Frequency

Slings: Micro crickets or fruit flies 2× per week
Juveniles: Small crickets or roach nymphs once or twice weekly
Adults: Medium crickets or dubia roaches every 7–10 days
Remove uneaten prey within 24 hours.

Growth Rate & Lifespan

Slow to moderate growth. Females may take 4 – 5 years to reach maturity and live 15 – 20 years. Males mature faster, typically living 3 – 5 years post-maturity.

Handling / Caution

Considered one of the most handleable species, but handling should still be minimal to prevent injury from falls. Move slowly and use gentle tools for enclosure work.
