Origin / Habitat
Native to Guatemala and southern Mexico, this species inhabits tropical forests, grasslands, and forest-edge areas. It establishes shallow burrows or retreats beneath natural debris, often reinforcing them with dense layers of silk. The environment is warm, moderately humid, and well-ventilated, with dry periods alternating with heavy seasonal rainfall.
Category
New World Terrestrial
Adult Size
Females: 4 – 5 in (10 – 13 cm) leg span
Males: smaller, slender, shorter lifespan
Temperament / Behavior
Generally defensive but not aggressive. Quick and alert, with a tendency to dart rather than strike. Displays bright orange abdominal striping against a dark body, creating its signature “tiger rump” appearance. Webs actively around its burrow entrance and may partially seal it during premolt.
Recommended Enclosure
Terrestrial enclosure with 4 – 5 in of slightly moist substrate to allow for burrowing and silk anchoring. Include cork bark or half logs for cover. Moderate ventilation is important — enough to prevent stagnation without drying out the substrate.
Temperature & Humidity
Temperature: 74 – 80 °F (23 – 27 °C)
Humidity: 65 – 75 % RH
Ventilation: Moderate airflow; occasional light misting to maintain humidity balance
Diet / Feeding Frequency
Slings: Micro crickets or fruit flies 2–3× per week
Juveniles: Small crickets or roach nymphs twice weekly
Adults: Medium crickets or roaches once weekly
Remove uneaten prey within 24 hours.
Growth Rate & Lifespan
Moderate growth rate. Females reach maturity in approximately 3 years and live 10 – 12 years. Males mature faster and live 3 – 4 years post-maturity.
Handling / Caution
Handling not recommended. While not overly defensive, it can move quickly and may flick urticating hairs when disturbed. Use tools for enclosure work.
